Pastel de Natas Tarts Recipe

Pastel de Natas Tarts are a traditional Portuguese pastry with a creamy custard filling baked in a flaky puff pastry crust. Ideal as a dessert or an afternoon snack.

  • Prep Time: 30 minutes
  • Cook Time: 25 minutes
  • Total Time: 55 minutes

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Roll out the thawed puff pastry and cut it into 12 circles.
  • Fill a muffin tin halfway with pastry circles.
  • Whisk together sugar and flour in a medium saucepan.
  • Whisk in the milk and egg yolks until combined.
  • Cook, whisking constantly, over medium heat until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil, about 10-15 minutes.
  • Take the pan off the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
  • Fill pastry shells 3/4 full with the mixture.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the filling has set and the pastry has turned golden brown.
  • Remove from oven and cool for 10 minutes in the muffin tin.
  • Remove the tarts from the muffin tin and place them on a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Before serving, sprinkle with cinnamon.
