Traditional Portuguese custard tarts are made with a rich and creamy custard filling encased in flaky, buttery pastry. They're a popular snack in Portugal and all over the world.

Time Needed

  • Prep Time: 30 minutes
  • Cook Time: 25 minutes
  • Total Time: 55 minutes

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius.
  • On a floured surface, roll out the puff pastry and cut out circles to fit a muffin tin.
  • Prick the bottoms of the tins with a fork and press the pastry into them.
  • Heat the milk, sugar, cinnamon stick, and lemon peel in a saucepan until boiling.
  • Remove from the heat and set aside to cool for a few minutes.
  • Whisk together the egg yolks and cornflour in a mixing bowl until smooth.
  • Pour the milk mixture through a sieve into the egg mixture while constantly whisking.
  • Fill the pastry cases halfway with the custard mixture and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the custard is set.
  • Remove from the oven and cool for a few minutes in the tin before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Serve warm or cold, dusted with cinnamon and icing sugar.
