Egg Tarts (Natas) Recipe

Egg tarts (also known as natas) are a Portuguese delicacy that has spread throughout the world. These tarts have a crispy, flaky crust and a rich and light creamy custard-like filling.

Ingredients

Time Needed

  • Prep Time: 45 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 1 hour, 5 minutes

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Mix flour and butter with your fingertips in a mixing bowl until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
  • Mix in the cold water until the dough comes together.
  • Refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes after wrapping it in plastic wrap.
  • Roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thickness and cut out circles with a 3-inch cookie cutter.
  • Fill a muffin tin halfway with the circles.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the sugar and flour.
  • Whisk in the milk gradually until the mixture is smooth.
  • Incorporate the egg yolks and vanilla extract.
  • Fill the prepared tart shells about 2/3 full with the mixture.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the filling has set and the crust has browned.
  • Cool for 10 minutes in the muffin tin before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
